ERP Implementations: "In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb"

By Johnny Nugent

During the month of March, the phrase “in like a lion and out like a lamb” really couldn’t be more true for us New Englanders. Temperatures these past few days have been in the teens to the thirties with some flurries mixed in, but by the end of the month we will see average temperatures range from the thirties to the fifties with more sun and rain than snow.

As I sit at my desk listening to the winter winds whip at the window, I wonder do ERP implementations have something in common with the month of March? Can you say that ERP implementations come “in like a lion and out like a lamb”?

I don’t believe there’s a black and white answer to this question as the ERP implementation experience can vary greatly depending on many factors. Let’s take a look at both sides.

In many ways you can say this phrase holds true for ERP implementations.

Ways an ERP implementation comes in like a lion:

  • The ERP vendor search process can be tough – lots of time and effort goes into compiling a list of must have functionality, researching vendors, putting together an RFP, reviewing RFPs, meeting with vendors, viewing demos, negotiating contracts, etc. By the time you get to the start of implementation, many people are exhausted from the search that the implementation seems overwhelming.
  • The beginning of implementation typically includes things such as migrating data, looking at business processes and deciding what works and what needs to be changed, and lots and lots of training. All of these tasks can be grueling when employees also need to keep up with their typical day-to-day jobs.

1 Way an ERP implementation goes out like a lamb:

  • After the implementation is complete, you get to reap the rewards of your hard work - you’re maximizing efficiency, reducing costs, staying on schedule, and keeping your customers and employees happy.

While some may see ERP implementations as “in like a lion and out like a lamb”, others may argue that the end of the implementations when it’s time to “go live” is one of the most stressful parts of the ERP implementation process and therefore it’s more like “in like a lamb and out like a lion.” Whatever your view on ERP implementations is, almost all agree that it’s worth all the hard work and dedication to implement once you see the ROI.

Here at Visibility our expert consultants will walk you through every phase of the implementation and ensure the process is as smooth as possible. Come experience the streamlined implementation that VISIBILITY ERP offers.
