How AI is Changing the Way We Work

By Katie Foley

Last week I read the Wall Street Journal article titled "Amazon Is on the Cusp of Using More Robots Than Humans in Its Warehouses". It got me thinking, what does the workplace look like in the future with the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation? How can we benefit from the advances in technology while also developing skills that still make humans relevant in the workplace?

Today's blog will shift away from the typical industry specific content and zoom out to look at the workplace in general.

Automation v. AI

Automation and AI are two buzz words that we hear all the time, but what do they actually mean?

  • There are many definitions of automation, but one that I like best comes from IBM: "Automation is the application of technology, programs, robotics or processes to achieve outcomes with minimal human input."
  • IBM also defines AI as follows: "Artificial intelligence (AI) is technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human learning, comprehension, problem solving, decision making, creativity and autonomy."

While automation relies on and is limited by predefined rules, AI has the ability to learn, adapt and handle more complex tasks. Automation and AI might be different, but they often go hand in hand. In the workplace, automation would be responsible for automatic document processing while AI would be responsible for analyzing those documents.

Ways AI & Automation Will Elevate the Workplace

There are many ways that AI and automation have and will continue to enhance the workplace.

  • Boosted Efficiency - Automation can eliminate the need for humans to perform repetitive, time-consuming tasks. By freeing up time and mental energy, people can focus on what they do best: being creative, strategic, and innovative
  • Increased Accuracy - Automating as many processes as possible will eliminate human error. AI can also be programmed to go out and look for data errors.
  • Enhanced Decision Making - While automation can process a large amount of data very quickly, AI can help analyze a large amount of data very quickly. This will lead to faster, better informed decision making for business leaders.

These are just a few of the many ways automation and AI are changing the way we work. There is also the possibility for faster innovation and more empowered employees (due to eliminating mindless tasks for more meaningful work).

How Humans Can Stay Relevant

Automation and AI While automation will displace many human jobs, it will also create even more new opportunities. Workers can stay relevant by "upskilling" or acquiring new skills in areas that automation and AI cannot replicate such as critical thinking and creativity. Here are a few ways to stay relevant in these quickly changing times:

  • Focus on human centric skills including creativity, emotional intelligence, leadership, strategy, and connection. These are skills that cannot be easily replicated by a machine.
  • Invest your time in continuously learning. Whether through books, online courses, or self-study, train yourselves in hard skills such as AI basics as well as soft skills such as problem solving.
  • Make friends with AI. Instead of fearing AI, use AI to enhance your productivity. Think of AI as your assistant, not your replacement.

Conclusion

The future of the workplace may be uncertain, but by embracing technology and investing in what makes us human, we can create a workplace that's not only more efficient, but also more fulfilling and purposeful.
