Parenthood and ERP Series: Business Intelligence

By: Katie Foley

I’m officially over a year into this parenthood thing now. It’s as if I blinked and my little newborn became an almost walking, talking one-year old. Looking back on the year, I’ve made my share of mistakes along the way. Forgotten you name it (diapers, outfit changes, PACIFIERS!), mistimed naps and meals, and even looked away for a split second to find my baby taste testing a fist full of sand at the beach. However, it’s these mistakes along the way that have made me a stronger parent. It only takes one trip to the doctor’s office without pacifiers to never forget them again!

As a new mom, I’m always trying to improve my “mom” skills. How can I get out the door faster? How can I remember all the necessary items on the go? How can I perfectly time naps, playtime, and meals? What if there was some type of Business Intelligence software for parenthood? A tool that would constantly analyze data and turn it into meaningful parent-focused intelligence all without having to do any manual analysis. I could make fact-based decisions quickly (such as would it be better to go for naptime or playtime after lunch) and spot trends as they are happening (for example, I always forget this item when heading to the playground).

BI for parents would certainly be a luxury, however for a manufacturer it’s crucial. While it’s no big deal for me to spend a week experimenting with a new schedule to see how it works for my little one, manufacturers need real-time metrics to ensure they are maximizing production and efficiency to thrive in a competitive marketplace. Some of the other benefits of BI for manufacturers include:

  • Analyze meaningful data in real-time to make immediate fact based decisions
  • Spot trends as they are happening
  • Identify problems quickly and drill down to see how you can fix it
  • Provide consistent data across the organization
  • Eliminate the use of manual reporting services
  • Manage inventory better
  • Understand customer behavior better to predict future behavior
  • Identify revenue opportunities
  • Perform ad-hoc analysis with drag and drop functionality
  • Maximize your internal resources
